INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

The Victorian Government has significantly increased investment in transport infrastructure assets, supporting continued growth and ensuring benefits are more widely distributed. Victoria’s major project pipeline exceeds $100 billion with $70 billion committed to the transport sector. Construction of 100 major road and railprojects is to be delivered and planning underway for several future projects that are set to transform the way Victorians travel.

METRO TUNNEL

The $11 billion Metro Tunnel project will free up space in the City Loop to run more trains, more often right across the city – creating capacity for more than half a million extra passengers a week in the peak periods, post expected completion in 2025.

MELBOURNE AIRPORT RAIL

Melbourne Airport Rail is targeted to commence construction in 2022. With passenger numbers expected to almost double by 2038 to more than 67 million people, the Victorian and Commonwealth governments have committed up to $10 billion to this project to ensure Melbourne’s public transport infrastructure is ready to connect tourists and business people to where they need to go.

RAIL TECHNOLOGY R&D

The Rail Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) supports the rail sector by developing new technologies and knowledge to enhance Australia’s rail manufacturing capacity and competitiveness. Formed in 2014, members include innovative rail manufacturing multinationals, SMEs and key research providers.

The Melbourne tram network is linked to renewable energy which reduces the cities carbon footprint by offsetting 200,000 tonnes of carbon emissions which delivers a clean, sustainable future for Victoria. This means Melbourne has the world’s largest tram network which is also totally offset by clean energy. Melbourne also has the world’s largest continually operating tram network and the innovative tracker app provides real-time timetable information – a convenient tool for the travelling public.

The city’s major ports, roads, rail, airports and freight hubs are well networked for freight movement to local, regional, interstate and international markets. Regional Victoria has an extensive network of rail and road connected intermodal freight terminals that enables seamless movement of freight.

WORLD CONGRESS ON INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

More than eleven years in the making, over 11,000 delegates from over 73 countries converged on Melbourne in October 2016 as the city played host to the largest ever intelligent transport systems (ITS) conference in Australia – the 23rd Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress (ITS 2016). Centred around the theme ‘enhancing liveable cities and communities’ Melbourne was the ideal host city to demonstrate this theme, named for seven consecutive years as the World’s Most Liveable City, with liveability enhanced by intelligent transport systems contribution to the community.
